what are progressive jackpots?

Enter the power of the crowd. Progressive slots are the crowdsourcing version of online one-armed bandits. Thousands of players join the network of a progressive slot on a daily basis. They feed the central jackpot a few cents at a time, each time they spin the reels and lose. It’s only a few cents for the player but, with so many players chipping in for weeks and months on end, these cents quickly grow into millions of dollars. At the time of writing, Mega Moolah stood at a dizzying 7,877,235 USD and counting. No wonder they call this progressive jackpot ‘The Millionaire Maker”. But other progressive slots, such as King Cashalot, Major Millions, and The Dark Knight also offer big jackpots.  Big enough to make it hard to find a valid reason to keep your day job!

Where can you play progressive slots?

Progressive slots can be found at most of the main casinos, depending on their software platform. The biggest and best-known ones are those run on Microgaming software. These progressive slots are known for their huge jackpots, exciting gameplay and excellent graphics. NetEnt and Playtech also offer some really excellent progressive slot games that are well worth a look.

Take a look around at my recommended online casinos to see what’s on offer or if you’re keen to get started you can check out my top five progressive slots here:

  1. Mega Moolah
The mother of all progressives, this well loved progressive offers the biggest jackpots you’ll find anywhere online, along with plenty of smaller payouts and great features. If you’re lucky enough to net the mega jackpot, this game will truly live up to its name!
  2. Major Millions
This is another popular progressive slot from Microgaming and much of its appeal is in its simplicity. You don’t have to wager a huge amount to be in with a chance to win here, but if you do get the big one you could pull in well over £1 million.
  3. King Cashalot
Who’s the king? You are if you manage to trigger this huge progressive jackpot! Lots of fun to be had here, and you don’t have wager an arm and a leg to be in for a shot at the big jackpot and a minimum payout of £100,000.
  4. Beach Life
Who doesn’t love a day at the beach? This retro inspired progressive slot has a fun, holiday vibe that’s sure to make you smile. If the colourful, cute symbols don’t make you happy, the jackpot surely will!
  5. The Dark Knight
I love Batman and this slot is a combination between a themed video slot and a progressive so you really do get the best of both worlds. You may shiver at the sinister undertones of Gotham City, but trigger the bonus round and you’ll be in for a chance at winning at least £1 million.

How to win the jackpot

Slot games are all based on chance so while it would be nice to be able to give you a strategy that would guarantee a big payout, that would be completely impossible.

One tip I can offer is to check the small print (or my game review) carefully before you play. With many of the big progressives you need to bet the maximum to even be in with a chance of triggering the big one.

Progressive jackpots usually work in one of two ways. You either need to get a certain combination of matching symbols on a specified payline (most commonly this is five wilds on the last payline), or you play a randomly triggered bonus game to win.

Conclusion

Progressive slots are a favourite for many UK based slot players, and a lucky handful of them have gone on to become multi millionaires as a result. If you’re going to play online slots, you may as well play big and give the progressives a go!
